Wayne Husted

Wayne Husted was the second of Blenko’s storied Big Four designers – and the second in a row to come to Blenko from Alfred University and NY State’s School of Ceramics, where he studied ceramics and design. Husted had very little experience with glass before coming to Blenko to replace another Alfred graduate, Winslow Anderson. With some few exceptions, most of the wares in the 1953-1962 catalogs are Husted’s designs for Blenko – and his design tenure marked a period of wild and continuous experimentation with form, shape, and finishing. His works in glass were often counterintuitive and difficult to make – but undeniably magical and compelling in their finished forms. Whether it’s his heavily-prunted 597 bowls, or his teapot decanters, or his whimsical bird decanters, Husted’s work is celebrated and deeply collectible. Husted was essentially the first designer at Blenko to make architectural-scale glass – floor decanters with tall topping stoppers that came across the finish line at more than two feet tall. During - and after - his time at Blenko, Husted was a prolific designer for other glass companies and design firms.

Growing 70+ years with Blenko!

One of my earliest memories is of visiting Blenko in the early 1950's with my mother. I would have been four or five years old at the most. At that time visitors could wander around the factory as work was being done. That may have been when Mr. Husted was the designer because there were racks full of very large vases, and also lining the floor. One of these items exploded near me and my mother was sure I had broken it. To this day I protest my innocence! But as I was being chastised by my mother, a worker spoke up, "Oh don't worry lady," he said, "We break more than that every day!" Now I have the glass my mother collected, mostly glassware and bowls, but also lamps, balls, Williamsburg reproductions, paperweights, The Holy Family plaque (one of my favorites) and more. We often give salad sets as wedding presents, and the #384 water pitcher (of which I have seven!) as house warming presents. Now I take every opportunity to educate friends in California about Blenko Glass, and I love looking for Blenko "in the wild!"
